Rishikanth vs Pradeep Ranganathan: Same Boy-Next-Door Looks, Different Appeal to Women. Why?

Image
Women's perceptions of these actors are shaped less by physical appearance and more by how their films portray women, romance and relationships. Rishikanth and Pradeep Ranganathan (PR) share dark skin, unconventional looks, lean bodies, and boy-next-door appeal. Yet their reception among audiences, particularly women, is strikingly different. The difference isn't how they look, but the kind of masculinity they represent. Rishikanth's roles in Modha Rathiri and Dorothy portray men capable of empathy, emotional vulnerability and respecting women's choices and identities.  His interviews similarly emphasise feminism, equality and learning from women. PR's films, meanwhile, repeatedly centre male insecurity, romantic rejection and wounded egos. Women often become sources of men's suffering or instruments of their redemption, while progressive dialogues coexist with regressive gender stereotypes, as shown in Dude. And perhaps that's why Rishikanth resonates wit...

Dude Roast

Image
One line review: Dude tries to please both progressive and regressive audiences and fails at both - while succeeding at being shallow. 1. A woman proposes and the man she proposes to cracks a bawdy joke. Progressive: Woman proposing - appeals to progressive audience. Regressive: Man uses a blue film reference to the kneeling position  - appeals to regressive male audience. 2. Kural proposes marriage to Agan without even asking if he has mutual feelings for her. She assumes that he loves her because he's her first cousin. I saw this in Romeo Juliet as well. How can people assume such things? It's like an arranged marriage setup - everything works presumptuously.  3. Nuptial thread isn't important - what's important is the girl's heart behind the thread - then proceeds with a dialogue that yarn can't thread a needle without the needle's consent. Honestly, it was exhausting and confusing at the same time. The film tries too hard to round up divisive audiences...

I Didn't Enjoy Dragon: Here's Why

Image
It'd be weird to hear that I watched Dragon in tears. But that's the truth.  Let's explore the injustices and hypocrisies that I couldn't stand in this movie, one that everyone is praising. My mom was like, "Adhepdi ivanuku poiyi ivlo azhagana ponnunga kidaikuthu?" (How come a lowlife like him gets the "most beautiful" ladies? The only constant in Dragon's life is "pretty girls." I am following conventional beauty standards and age old Tamil cinema pairing of men who are "not good-looking" with "good-looking" women. He got and wanted only the "hottest" women when he was studious, useless brat, successful cheater, and a human with bare minimum qualities.  What's so great about realizing one's mistakes, coming clean, and not ruining another person's life? It's the bare minimum! Basic quality! Why do we keep glorifying men who only pass the bare minimum? Women have to turn men around for the be...

Tamil Movies Become Box Office Hits because They're Fantastic?

Image
For many, Love Today’s high rating and box office status are indications that it’s a “fantastic, good film.” I’m here to say why it’s not the case. Many problematic Tamil movies have become superhits. 1. Padayappa I am neither going to talk about Padayappa’s dialogue about how a woman should be nor his Sanskrit classification of women. Neelambari kisses him without his consent and his father blames him for it. The movie is a massive hit. 2. Minnale There was a time when I swooned about this movie. However, it glorifies stalking and lying, and manipulating to get a girl. Rajesh sees a woman playing in a thunderstorm with a bunch of kids and declares that she’s his kind of girl. <Jackie Chan confusion moment> Minnale had a high rating and was commercially successful just like Love Today. 3. Naatamai From telling a rapist to marry his victim, how women are not equal to men no matter how more educated the former is, to checking if the woman they want to marry to their son stutt...

Love Today Seruppadi Review

Image
When I saw Tamil men hailing Love Today as an awesome movie, I knew that I had watch it and give it a slipper shot review. So, here goes... Male Gaze IDK, Surya, and Arya all show their bodies to the world. How would it be if their wives told them to wear dupattas? That absurdity is exactly what I felt when Uththaman used a safety pin to cover Nikki’s waist in a saree. No one should see your girlfriend's body. But you will ask for pictures from random women, say that you'd like to fuck random women in locker room GCs and shag for actresses. When questioned, it's all fantasy, nothing serious.  The “Grave Sin” and “Just Fun” Bias If committed women maintain a close relationship with their ex, reply to DMs from unknown men, and talk affectionately to a guy who has a romantic interest, it’s the sin of the highest order. If committed men ask for pictures from random women, say depraved things about women in GCs, don’t delete pictures when they say they did, treat actresses as sh...
