Decoding Sethu (Vivek) of Alaipayuthey

Image
Vivek's Sethu character in Alaipayuthey showcases the basic qualities men should have. I think his role is underrated. As it is the current trend for us to dig up old favorites and dissect them, I am doing the same, ft Alaipayuthey Sethu.  Sethu likes Shakti, but once he knows that the feelings aren’t mutual, he doesn’t pester her or behaves like he has the right to marry her. Usually, murai paiyan tends to disturb and harass their murai ponnu and it’s shown in many movies, from Kizhakku Cheemayile to Kanden Kadhalai. Sethu doesn't do that. I feel bad when Shakti mocks Sethu by mimicking his stammer. And I rather Sethu defend himself. But he takes it very lightly. Maybe he thought that Shakti deserves someone better than him. Maybe because he loves her. Whatever it is, I have mixed feelings about this because self-respect (not ego) is important for everyone, even in front of people you love. Sethu actually stops his mom from talking about him marrying Shakti and never brings...

Minsara Kanavu - Loved It as a Kid, Not so Much as an Adult

Image
I grew up watching Minsara Kanavu and dancing to the Ooh La La La song with my cousins. I absolutely loved all the characters and I vibe to the movie's playlist and BGM until now. Now, as a grown woman, I am able to see the underbelly within the movie's plot and I could understand Priya's feelings - as a kid, I used to think that she's overreacting when she learns that she was subjected to schemes by Deva in order to make her fall in love with Thomas. That said, let's look at the problematic areas in this evergreen favorite of many - I am about to break this furniture and if you don't want your sweet memories with Minsara Kanavu being salli salliya odachified (broken into smithereens), you are warned - read and there is no going back! Body shaming in such a refreshing song - "Your nose is oversized. It's okay ma, we'll get plastic surgery done!" "Do you see the mirror every morning?" And we used to laugh at these lines, dismissin...

Love Today Seruppadi Review

Image
When I saw Tamil men hailing Love Today as an awesome movie, I knew that I had watch it and give it a slipper shot review. So, here goes... Male Gaze IDK, Surya, and Arya all show their bodies to the world. How would it be if their wives told them to wear dupattas? That absurdity is exactly what I felt when Uththaman used a safety pin to cover Nikki’s waist in a saree. No one should see your girlfriend's body. But you will ask for pictures from random women, say that you'd like to fuck random women in locker room GCs and shag for actresses. When questioned, it's all fantasy, nothing serious.  The “Grave Sin” and “Just Fun” Bias If committed women maintain a close relationship with their ex, reply to DMs from unknown men, and talk affectionately to a guy who has a romantic interest, it’s the sin of the highest order. If committed men ask for pictures from random women, say depraved things about women in GCs, don’t delete pictures when they say they did, treat actresses as sh...
